Spotlight Series: 5 Minutes with Hon. Stephen Dawson MLC, Western Australian Government

Could you tell us about your background and career journey? Why did you join the public sector?  

My life has been jampacked with a wide range of interesting and varied jobs. I started my working career doing a paper round at 10 years of age and since then, I have worked as a performer, barman, a Hungry Jacks manager, and as the state manager of a media and public relations company.  

I have also worked as an adviser and Chief of Staff to a number of Ministers, both in Western Australia (WA) and Victoria before being elected to WA Parliament at the 2013 State election. My goal was, and still is, to have a voice and make a difference.  

What are your personal habits for success? 

I enjoy staying fit and focused and doing this through running and boxing. Professionally, in politics, I joke that we’re here for a good time and not a long time, so I’m always eager to get things done. 

Public sector project you're most proud of? 

I was working as the Environmental Minister at the time, and I introduced legislation that banned single-use plastic in WA and implemented the Containers for Change program, which is a huge success. I am passionate about taking action now to protect our environment and the use of plastics needs to be controlled and reduced at all costs. 

As the Emergency Services Minister I now witness first-hand the results of climate change with major fires, cyclones, and flooding and I believe that as individuals we all have a role to play in reducing climate change. Do what you can, when you can to make a difference. 

Can you share your top tip for government professionals? 

Be brave, be innovative. 

What is your greatest aspiration for government? 

To be able to make decisions in a timely fashion that can positively impact the lives of Western Australians.
