Women in Leadership Spotlight Series: Michaela Geronima Doelman - CHRO, Washington State ESD
I’m the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) for the Washington State Employment Security Department (ESD). I kind of got here by accident. Although public service was always where I wanted to be, HR wasn’t even on my radar of options, I just knew I wanted to help people like my parents did in their public service jobs. After graduating from college and working in Mexico for a couple of years, I moved back to the US in 2007 and wasn’t in the position to be picky about what job I could take, I just wanted one that paid the bills …

Cyber Security in Healthcare
The health sector has unique challenges associated with the security and storage of data and patient information. Health institutions are also at the forefront of health technology innovation because they are very reliant on technology, but are adaptable when they need to be, as COVID-19 has shown. This paper brings together four technical and medical directors from four health institutions across Canada. They provide perspectives on how they have dealt with their unique challenges, and how COVID-19 got in the way. They also show what is possible in terms of keeping data, patients, staff and facilities secure.

How 5 City Leaders are Balancing Operational Efficiency & Innovation in 2021 - Event Recap by Tony Batalla
I recently had the good fortune and pleasure of serving as the Chair of Public Sector Network’s “Improving Operational Efficiency in Local Government” virtual event on January 27, 2021. Even though Alex Chard said he was looking for a charismatic innovation leader for the role, he settled on me after I told him I didn’t know one. Hey, I’ll take it! The event was well attended and nicely put together, as you would expect from PSN (aside from having me as the chair, which was risky). But despite my cable TV gameshow-like hosting, we covered important ground. Leaders from across …

Edge Computing for Dummies
It’s estimated that by 2025, 75% of data will be processed outside the traditional data centre or cloud. New and exciting methods of computing have emerged, decentralising data processing to the ‘edge’ of the network. Turns out, the concept is pretty simple! And it’s definitely more common than you’d think. In fact, edge computing probably already offers a tonne of common-sensical solutions in your everyday life. technologies at ‘the edge’ of the network + processing data a range of mobile, cloud or physical infrastructure + distributing data among themselves interoperable sensors, satellites, mobiles, cars, etc + collecting and processing data …

Data and Analytics in Healthcare
In the healthcare sector, good data and analysis is critical to ensuring a good patient experience and better diagnostics. Data supports policy decisions and equips clinicians to make better decisions. But data isn’t always accessible or readily available in the best format. This paper brings together the data journeys of three healthcare institutions from three jurisdictions. For each one, good data collection and analysis has been able to unlock some of their barriers and improve the healthcare that they are able to provide.
