Meet Wayne Vore - a 10-year State of Texas veteran of three agencies. He has a wide variety of experience – from application development to product marketing -- in his 25+ years of IT experience including as a co-founder of a pair of start-up companies. Ahead of his Keynote Session at the live Government Innovation Texas event on Octopber 19th, we sat down with Wayne for an exclusive Speaker Spotlight Q&A session:
Q1:
What do you enjoy most about your role as Texas Health & Human Services' CTO ?
A1 :
I like the creativity needed in problem solving. I don’t get the same problem over and over. I am allowed the freedom to think *way* outside the box.
Q2:
Your Government Keynote, 'Best Practices in Implementing Enterprise Architecture for Optimum Results' will discuss how Enterprise Architecture is the leading discipline for aligning IT spending on technology with business strategy. However, it has proven very difficult to implement in government agencies. Is there one priority that is essential to your department? Can you explain why?
A2 :
In my agency and department, our priority is to drive to better quality solutions. Our EA discipline is structured around incrementally improving our solutions because it is an area where we struggle.
Q3:
What is the #1 mistake that you’ve seen government leaders make while implementing Enterprise Architecture? How can those who have made this mistake begin to rectify it?
A3 :
I can tell you my #1 mistake! Trying to do too much and not understanding your organization’s capacity for change. You have to be realistic is the biggest thing.
Q4:
Is there a future or current project you’re working on at Texas Health and Human Services that you’re particularly excited about? What impact do you hope this will have on the agency & state at large?
A4 :
We are working on aligning our technical architecture work with our budgeting work. If we get it right, we’ll really be able to improve our risk profile for our projects.
Q5:
What 's your 'top t ip' for those considering a career in the public sector?
A5 :
Patience. Just kidding. I’d say the #1 thing is to understand that the public sector isn’t an ROI, bottom-line business. It is a risk management business. You have to start thinking of investments/spending as reducing risk.
