Government Innovator Spotlight Q&A: Michaela Geronima Doelman - CHRO, Washington State ESD

I’m the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) for the Washington State Employment Security Department (ESD). I kind of got here by accident. Although public service was always where I wanted to be, HR wasn’t even on my radar of options, I just knew I wanted to help people like my parents did in their public service jobs. After graduating from college and working in Mexico for a couple of years, I moved back to the US in 2007 and wasn’t in the position to be picky about what job I could take, I just wanted one that paid the bills …

Speaker Spotlight: Andrew Tongue, Deputy Secretary Biosecurity Compliance

We are working on the assumption we will have a major pest or disease incursion this decade. Therefore, we are looking to ensure our preparedness, response and recovery systems are strong. This involves “defence in depth”; having a multi-layered system to deal with threats pre-border, at the border, and post-border. We need to work closely with all our stakeholders, including the general public, to identify and mitigate biosecurity risks.

Speaker Spotlight: Dr Tobias Feakin, Ambassador for Cyber Affairs and Critical Technology

Our priorities in 2021 include engagement on standards, critical technology supply chains and ensuring states understand their obligations to act responsibly in cyberspace. Ultimately, we face a future where our values are not upheld or respected by technology, and our prosperity, security and social cohesion is at risk if we don’t take action now. Our international engagement must continue to advocate for a cyberspace and technology that is in our interest, and that of our likeminded liberal democratic partners. However, the hardening of networks alone is not enough to protect Australia’s national security interests. This is why the Australian Government, …

In short, I am a health insurance problem solver and educator. Women in Leadership Spotlight Series: Colleen McManus HR Programs Manager & Executive Consultant, State of Arizona

Much of my public sector career has been spent in para-military agencies, so I became accustomed to environments that were largely comprised of males, particularly in the key leadership and decision-making roles. I learned that if I regarded and presented myself as a professional first and woman second, other people saw and treated me as a professional. When I moved into senior leadership, I had the opportunity to mentor other women and create development programs for all staff in these environments, which helped to bring more diversity and inclusion in leadership roles. Throughout my career, I have been immersed in …
