Strengthening Australian Cyber Security for a More Resilient Future
After a number of large scale cyber-attacks over the last year, the security of citizen data and systems of national significance remains at the forefront of the Government’s agenda. With the first ever Minister for Cyber Security, Hon Claire O’Neil, being appointed in June 2022, there is now a dedicated focus to reduce the risk of further breaches to Australian data and networks.
There have been calls from security professionals that a major overhaul to protocol and cyber security is required to improve Australia’s overall resilience and clarify strategies for businesses and organisations alike. After the recent breach, Optus are now facing a class action lawsuit from affected customers and there are calls from the Australian public to make businesses and agencies more accountable for protecting sensitive data. As a result, the current government is developing a new Cyber Security Strategy with policy reform and initiatives in four key areas.
According to Department of Home Affairs these are:
- A secure economy and thriving cyber ecosystem
- A secure and resilient critical infrastructure and government sector
- A sovereign and assured capability to counter cyber threats
- Australia as a trusted and influential global cyber leader, working in partnership with our neighbours to lift cyber security and build a cyber resilient region
Other crucial areas impacting the strengthening of Australia’s cyber security posture include the workforce and skills shortage. There is a recruitment push within government to draw new people to the industry. Attracting female employees is critical to improving the future cyber security workforce. The increased sophistication of attacks is a constant challenge, forcing the need for constant improved security measures and increased vigilance and educating citizens and the broader workforce on cyber security is crucial in improving Australian cyber security as a whole.
