Australia's Connected Future

Changes and movement in Australia's connectivity - what's happening with telecommunications and networks across Australia

When it comes to connectivity, there are some big changes taking place across Australia.

  • A number of reviews and public consultations are underway, including the 2024 Regional Telecommunications Review. The Review occurs every 3 years and is an opportunity to examine the existing and future telecommunication needs in regional, rural, and remote communities across Australia.

  • The Australian Government is also considering options to modernise delivery of universal telecommunications services, including how they can be funded.

  • Recent policy amendments, including updates to the Telecommunications in New Development (TIND) policy also now place an obligation on developers to actively consider the inclusion of mobile coverage in planning for new developments, in a similar way to other essential utilities – such as water and electricity.

  • The Better Connectivity Plan is a key initiative and part of the Australian Government's telecommunications agenda and is providing more than $1.1 billion to rural and regional communities. This commitment forms part of the Government's investment of more than $2.2 billion in regional communications.
  • The Plan will: improve mobile and broadband connectivity and resilience in rural and regional Australia; and drive productivity and improve equity for these communities.

  • 3G networks are also being switched off. 3G was designed for calls, texts and access to basic online information, whereas 4G and 5G technologies are better suited to the range of online applications that Australians have come to expect. Whilst the switch-off will allow mobile network operators to boost the capacity, speed and reliability of their 4G and 5G networks, some Australians will need to upgrade their device. Some 4G devices will appear to operate normally after the switch-offs but are hardwired to route Triple Zero calls through 3G and will also need to be updated. Australians who receive information from their provider indicating that their device may be affected will need to take action.

Connectivity in Australia is nothing short of dynamic. At the inaugural, Australian Connectivity Showcase, taking place on the 31 July 2024, Government leaders across – Federal, State and Local government – will gather to share insights, discuss, and network with peers on what’s next for Australia’s connectivity. There will be a significant focus on regional and remote connectivity, with speakers representing New South Wales, Victoria, Northern Territory, and the ACT.
