Future Policing
The attitudes of the public towards police across the world are currently at an ebb. To change this perception and to remain relevant and connected to the communities they serve, police need to change their own behaviours, attitudes and practices.
IoT in the Public Sector: How We Can Work to Build a Secure and Ethical Network of 'Things'
The Internet of Things (IoT) could, and ultimately will, profoundly transform the public sector by altering how government entities gather data and information. Tech analyst company IDC predicts that by 2025 there will be a total 41.6 billion connected IoT devices influencing the way we build, manage and exist in our cities and spaces. The IoT alliance NZ suggests that IoT ‘could soon be as commonplace as electricity in the everyday lives of people in OECD countries.’ The adoption of this techy web of things could see increased productivity for New Zealand government processes and decision making. Therefore, transforming economic and …

Women in Leadership Spotlight Series: Michaela Geronima Doelman - CHRO, Washington State ESD
I’m the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) for the Washington State Employment Security Department (ESD). I kind of got here by accident. Although public service was always where I wanted to be, HR wasn’t even on my radar of options, I just knew I wanted to help people like my parents did in their public service jobs. After graduating from college and working in Mexico for a couple of years, I moved back to the US in 2007 and wasn’t in the position to be picky about what job I could take, I just wanted one that paid the bills …

Cyber Security in Healthcare
The health sector has unique challenges associated with the security and storage of data and patient information. Health institutions are also at the forefront of health technology innovation because they are very reliant on technology, but are adaptable when they need to be, as COVID-19 has shown. This paper brings together four technical and medical directors from four health institutions across Canada. They provide perspectives on how they have dealt with their unique challenges, and how COVID-19 got in the way. They also show what is possible in terms of keeping data, patients, staff and facilities secure.

How 5 City Leaders are Balancing Operational Efficiency & Innovation in 2021 - Event Recap by Tony Batalla
I recently had the good fortune and pleasure of serving as the Chair of Public Sector Network’s “Improving Operational Efficiency in Local Government” virtual event on January 27, 2021. Even though Alex Chard said he was looking for a charismatic innovation leader for the role, he settled on me after I told him I didn’t know one. Hey, I’ll take it! The event was well attended and nicely put together, as you would expect from PSN (aside from having me as the chair, which was risky). But despite my cable TV gameshow-like hosting, we covered important ground. Leaders from across …

Edge Computing for Dummies
It’s estimated that by 2025, 75% of data will be processed outside the traditional data centre or cloud. New and exciting methods of computing have emerged, decentralising data processing to the ‘edge’ of the network. Turns out, the concept is pretty simple! And it’s definitely more common than you’d think. In fact, edge computing probably already offers a tonne of common-sensical solutions in your everyday life. technologies at ‘the edge’ of the network + processing data a range of mobile, cloud or physical infrastructure + distributing data among themselves interoperable sensors, satellites, mobiles, cars, etc + collecting and processing data …
