After the event, we were grateful to have had the opportunity to interview Neo4j in an intimate conversation on their perspectives with technology trends and barriers faced in their community.
What overall trends are you seeing in terms of technology in your industry?
We’re seeing very strong demand for knowledge graphs which are essentially an interconnected dataset enriched with meaning, and primed for complex decision making
Data is no longer simple. It's complex, connected, deeply hierarchical, recursive, and hidden. Big data is from the pre-pandemic era. We’re moving to small and wide data as it provides more context, especially when it comes to machine learning
As complex data volumes grow, the types and composition of problems become very varied - an issue government departments and agencies (and the private sector) continue to grapple with. But we have the answer in the form of knowledge graphs that present new ways to use data to drive citizen outcomes.
What is the next big thing in terms of technology and where do you see it in the next 2 to 5 years?
Graph technologies are the next big thing. Gartner predicts that by 2025, graph technologies will be used in 80% of data and analytics innovations, up from 10% in 2021, enabling rapid decision-making for organisations.
A graph data platform can efficiently model complex networks of entities and their interrelationships, and uncover patterns that are difficult to detect using traditional representations - such as tables - that are great at collecting and processing data but miss the relationships between data points.
Aside from the pandemic , what have been some of the technology challenges or barriers experienced in the last 12 months?
Broadly speaking, improvements in and adoption of technology in our sector have been hampered by the talent crunch that continues with no signs of abating.
However, Neo4j has been fortunate in attracting and retaining top talent as people want to work with the best technology serving the best brand names.
For example, NASA’s Neo4j graph data platform enables HR to access and query complex data about employees, departments, programs, locations, skills, and career paths in real time. They can track and predict skill gaps, making for smoother succession planning.

What has been your best performing technology in the last 12 months and why?
Neo4j’s graph data platforms are the market leader. We set the industry benchmark by solving organisations’ biggest and most complex problems without costly, multi-year implementations.
