Why investing in technology is crucial for a modern council workplace

Today’s local government workplace continues to evolve to meet the needs of both employees and its community. The global pandemic has catapulted local governments across the country into a new world of remote working, agile policy making and rapid service design.

What exactly is a modern workplace? .

“Modern workplace” is a term used to describe organisations who recognise digital collaboration, technology and tools as fundamental elements of their future. Remote working, new technologies and culture changes are just some of the things defining the modern council workplace.

Technology is key .

Attracting and retaining talent is a key issue for all organisations, and local government is no exception. Technology can act as a major differentiator for attracting these employees – particularly in a world where remote working is the norm. If councils are unable to provide or keep up with these technological changes, they risk being left behind in the race for acquiring the right talent.

Because of this, councils need to focus on investing and modernising technology platforms; this includes technology for workplace collaboration and mobility, management of employee relations and the enablement of new service delivery models. It also requires careful thought into the diverse needs and situations of both current and future employees to ensure investments are inclusive and enabling to everyone.

Investment equals productivity .

It’s no secret that local governments tend to lean on the underinvested side when it comes to technology. However, without proper investment into the right technology, councils risk losing out on potential talent and this can have a devastating knock-on effect to the rest of the organisation. After all, employees are the backbone of any organisation, not least of all local councils.

By investing in and focussing on the right technology, councils also send their employees a clear message that they are serious about creating lasting and positive workplace changes. This in turn can improve productivity and employee satisfaction, as staff feel the benefits of those technological investments. Finally, when employees feel supported and enabled, citizens also benefit.

By adopting a future-thinking and broader mindset, local government can set themselves up for long-term success, attracting and retaining the right talent and enabling them to perform their roles effectively and efficiently.
