Mission 3: Building Trust through Reliable, Secure Digital Services and Sustainable Digital Infrastructure

The NSW Government is committed to providing reliable and stable digital services, ensuring that community interactions with government are secure and trustworthy. As digital becomes a larger part of daily life, safeguarding privacy and offering citizens control over their information are critical goals. Digital Infrastructure, encompassing both physical assets like data centres and virtual technologies like cloud computing, supports the state’s economy. Additionally, the NSW Government aims to align its Digital Infrastructure with environmental sustainability goals, including its Net Zero by 2050 target. To achieve this, ongoing modernisation of ICT systems and strategic partnerships with industry and academia will enhance security, service delivery, and sustainability.

Our Mission: Secure and Sustainable Digital Solutions

To maintain and strengthen community trust in digital services, the NSW Government has outlined key objectives that focus on transparency, security, reducing legacy systems, and meeting sustainability goals. The aim is to deliver a future-proof digital ecosystem that benefits both the community and the environment.

Key Objectives

To fulfil this mission, the NSW Government has set out four main objectives:

  1. Collect and Use Data Responsibly and Transparently
Handling large volumes of data requires a commitment to transparency and responsibility. The NSW Government aims to ensure that data is managed securely while providing individuals with control over their information. The NSW Digital ID, for example, simplifies interactions by allowing users to provide personal information only once, reducing redundancy and protecting privacy. By treating data as a strategic asset, the government can provide more personalised services while maintaining community trust.

  2. Enable Secure Information Sharing through Modern Digital Infrastructure
Digital Infrastructure is the backbone of secure and efficient service delivery. It supports everything from everyday services to critical infrastructure like transport networks. By enhancing both digital and physical infrastructure, the NSW Government aims to create secure, resilient systems that protect personal information while allowing easy access for users. The goal is to build spaces and platforms that are future-ready, adaptable, and secure.

  3. Reduce Legacy Technology and Duplication
Outdated systems can hinder efficiency and increase costs. The NSW Government is focused on phasing out legacy technology and replacing it with modern digital platforms that can be used across multiple agencies. These State Digital Assets (SDAs) enable better coordination, reduce duplication, and streamline service delivery. By simplifying and modernising its digital ecosystem, the government can deliver more seamless and cost-effective services to the community.

  4. Address Environmental Sustainability Goals through Digital Services
The environmental impact of digital infrastructure is a significant consideration. Data centres, for example, consume large amounts of energy. The NSW Government is committed to adopting sustainable practices, supporting the Climate Change (Net Zero Future) Act 2023, and reaching its goal of net zero emissions by 2050. By improving energy efficiency and embracing the principles of a circular economy, the government aims to reduce its environmental footprint while continuing to provide high-quality digital services.

Progress and Commitments

  • Single Digital Patient Record: A case study on how NSW is enhancing data management in healthcare.
  • Digital Evidence Cloud: Demonstrating the secure management and sharing of digital evidence.
  • Next Generation of Opal: Streamlining public transport through digital upgrades.
  • Carbon Zero Accelerator Platform: Aiming for reduced carbon emissions through digital innovation.

Moving Forward

The NSW Government is dedicated to building a secure, resilient, and sustainable digital future. By focusing on transparency, modernisation, and environmental responsibility, it aims to earn and maintain the community’s trust in its digital services. The goal is to provide secure, user-friendly interactions while ensuring that the state’s digital growth aligns with its environmental commitments.

Through a combination of advanced technologies, strategic investments, and partnerships, the NSW Government is paving the way for a digital ecosystem that supports the needs of all residents while fostering a greener and more sustainable future. This commitment to security, transparency, and sustainability underpins every step of the digital journey.
