Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) projects continue to be among the most ambitious and challenging transformation initiatives undertaken by organisations across both the public and private sectors. While many projects achieve their objectives, others encounter significant difficulties, ranging from budget overruns and delayed timelines to stakeholder dissatisfaction and reduced business confidence.
These challenges were the focus of Bhani Consulting's recent Lunch & Learn session, How to Fix a Failing ERP Project (Practical Rescue Steps), led by transformation advisor SP Singh.
The session explored a reality often overlooked in large-scale transformation programs: most failing ERP projects do not collapse suddenly. Instead, they gradually drift off course as early warning signs go unaddressed, governance weakens, decision-making slows, and project teams become increasingly focused on delivery activities rather than business outcomes.
A key theme throughout the discussion was the importance of identifying underlying causes rather than treating visible symptoms. Participants examined common indicators of project distress, including unclear ownership, poor stakeholder alignment, unresolved design decisions, inadequate reporting, and a growing gap between project status reports and operational reality.
Rather than focusing solely on recovery tactics, the session highlighted the need for leaders to re-establish clarity around project objectives, governance structures, accountability, and decision rights. Effective project recovery, attendees learned, often begins with creating transparency about the current state of the initiative and aligning stakeholders around a realistic path forward.
The discussion also challenged several common assumptions about ERP recovery. Increasing budgets, expanding project teams, or accelerating implementation activities may provide temporary relief, but these actions rarely address the root causes of project failure. Sustainable recovery requires organisations to understand why the project lost momentum in the first place and to make deliberate decisions about priorities, risks, and expected outcomes.
For public sector leaders, where ERP programs frequently support critical operational and service delivery functions, the lessons were particularly relevant. The ability to recognise warning signs early, maintain effective governance, and preserve stakeholder confidence remains essential to achieving long-term transformation success.
As organisations continue to invest heavily in digital transformation, the session reinforced an important message: struggling ERP projects are not necessarily doomed to fail. With the right leadership, governance, and intervention strategies, many projects can be stabilised, realigned, and successfully delivered.
The strong interest in the session reflects a growing recognition that project recovery is becoming just as important a capability as project delivery itself.
