Speaker Spotlight: Andrew Tongue, Deputy Secretary Biosecurity Compliance
We are working on the assumption we will have a major pest or disease incursion this decade. Therefore, we are looking to ensure our preparedness, response and recovery systems are strong. This involves “defence in depth”; having a multi-layered system to deal with threats pre-border, at the border, and post-border. We need to work closely with all our stakeholders, including the general public, to identify and mitigate biosecurity risks.
The importance of cloud in government
Hybrid IT and cloud have become critical in the digital transformation of government. When implemented effectively, Hybrid IT and cloud services present many opportunities, including flexibility, improved collaboration and scalability. While cloud adoption is accelerating, there are still barriers preventing government from capitalising on the hybrid IT economy. In the government sector, many Australian agencies are adopting cloud services to facilitate digital transformation. But while IaaS, SaaS and cloud-first are increasingly common today, many government agencies still find it difficult to move their core systems to the cloud, and to modernise, manage and secure their complex hybrid cloud and IT …

Hospital Management Improvement
In many ways, the pandemic has been disastrous for the whole country, particularly for Victoria which has had multiple outbreaks and significant periods of lockdown and restrictions. Yet at the same time, because the pandemic has exposed gaps and blockages in the way certain public sector institutions operated, there have been some positive outcomes too. “We want to get to a point that how people experience the public health system shouldn’t depend on where they live. We’re very keen to make sure that regardless of where you are located or whether or not you are on a waiting list, you …

Implementing human-centred design to achieve better long-term patient outcomes
All of these factors together will “improve, enhance or support our patients more effectively.” The one element that is missing though is “the impact or the involvement of the Whānau (extended family) that patients need.” The value of family and familial support services cannot be underestimated. The “old medical model,” sometimes referred to as ‘the shadow’ is still hanging over some facilities, but “the good news is that we are starting to move away from it.” Some clinicians fear this change because it may “upset the power imbalance” between doctors and patients, giving patients more of a say. As much …
3 reasons to focus on technology improvements in council
The digitisation of services is an inevitable part of council’s transformation. The strategic use of digital technologies can have a myriad of benefits that are not just limited to one department or service. Modern citizens expect their councils to be fluid with regards to how they provide a service. Just like with any other organisation, council customers expect to be able to access and interact with required services online, and on demand. For many customers – driven particularly by the younger generation as well as a global pandemic – the options of in- person, paper-based or even over-the-phone services are …

How enterprise architecture can establish a framework for transformation in government
Governments in this era are facing demands for enhanced and better-quality citizen service delivery, making IT modernisation and digital transformation critical. In a world where agility and innovation are highly valued, enterprise architecture is a key element in this transformation. Enterprise architecture is the process by which organisations standardise and organise IT infrastructure to aligns with business goals. These strategies support digital transformation, IT growth and the modernisation of IT as a department. Essentially, enterprise architecture help organisations structure IT projects and policies to achieve desired business results, as well as stay on top of industry trends disruptions using architecture …

Australian Healthcare Snapshot: Remote and Telehealth Services
Virtual care offers an unparalleled opportunity to deliver real change addressing the challenges of healthcare over the next decade. It has the power to transform every health and social care sector and the way services are delivered. Telehealth also improves access to health services for people in rural and remote areas. While telemedicine promises to grow rapidly over the next decade and has clear benefits, it still poses some technical and practical problems for healthcare providers. To better understand where Australian healthcare professionals feel the future of telehealth lies, we surveyed the attendees at our recent Improving Remote and Telehealth …
